As nice as these remastered pictures are… they feel pretty low effort, they have all the original film negatives from medium format hassleblad cameras… doing this feels pretty simple compared to past remastering and restoration work released to the Apollo missions.

For anyone looking to dive deep into all of this and see a monumental restoration of Apollo 17 material … I can recommend nothing better than the Apollo 17 section of Apollo in Real Time available at https://apolloinrealtime.org/17/

All the Mission Control communication loops, not just the CapCom to Astronauts communication your used to, no this has all the other people in that room of headsets, all the nerdy details played back in real time, even the “boring” overnight stuff while the astronauts slept but Mission Control as busy planning the next day.

And the story of the phenomenal effort to restore and digitise this data makes it all the more impressive. If you have even a passing interest in digital archival efforts I absolutely recommend learning about this project and the whole history behind it.

Why is Cernan's face so dirty in the first pic?

What parts of space travel involve getting grease-monkey-filthy?

Moon dust. Regolith is pretty dark against the suit or skin.
