The competent programmer is fully aware of the strictly limited size of his own skull; therefore he approaches the programming task in full humility, and among other things he avoids clever tricks like the plague. In a true and seemingly paradoxical way, healthy humility can help you go from being a good programmer to a great one. How much more true is that statement today with our modern computers, programming languages, IDEs, and associated tools. In his conclusion, he points out that we need to be mindful of both the complexities of software development and the limitations of our abilities.
